The main topic for discussion was a very common question in the present-day digital world. It revolved around how people could determine if a particular online piece of content was authentic, produced by an AI program, edited, recycled, or taken out of context. Numbers Protocol explained that the infrastructure they had built helped users find the full history of a particular digital item.

### What is Numbers Protocol in simple terms?

Provenance Infrastructure development goes on for both Human and AI. Even though the concept of provenance seems complicated for some, it simply means that it refers to the full history of any object. What we need to pay attention to is the full history of the digital content, be it a photo, video, or any kind of media file available online.

These days, it becomes harder to know if any given content was created by humans, by artificial intelligence, or even using both of these methods simultaneously. Several years back, one could easily distinguish between the content created by AI and human-generated media. Nowadays, however, artificial intelligence has become capable of creating highly realistic images and videos quickly enough, and this ability will only develop further.

Numbers Protocol allows following the full history of any content. One can learn if it was created by a person or artificially, when it was done, which tools have been used, and what edits have been done during that period.

It does not only go about knowing if any content was artificially created. This helps people understand the background completely. For example, if anyone posts an old video and claims that everything happened today, one will be able to check if this statement is true.

### How did Numbers Protocol begin?

We began our work in 2019, before the AI-generated content became ubiquitous. For the first phase, we offered the simplest application - Capture. The idea behind it was rather simple - a user captures a photo using the application and then traces its story since its creation. After the capture, all the changes done to a photo can be recorded as well.

Within the NFT trend, it naturally worked perfectly because it helped people determine ownership and track the story of their digital property, thus enabling them to record content provenance and transform it into NFTs.

Yet, gradually, it became clear that NFTs were only a small portion of a larger goal. Provenance is important not only for collecting items but also for the entire Internet as such. Since our activity takes place online, we need ways to determine the origin of digital content, trace its changes and present it in the proper context.

Therefore, we expanded our goal beyond NFTs to a much bigger challenge of creating a foundation of digital trust.

### Why did AI make provenance more important?

AI has changed the nature of the problem. AI is now capable of producing images, videos, text, and other content much faster than any human being, and it becomes more realistic with each iteration. As a result, there are ever-growing amounts of fake content online, where you cannot tell real from fake or even edited photos and videos.

What we are saying here is not that the AI-created content is inherently bad. AI is extensively used today, and we use AI in our daily routine as well. The problem here is that of transparency.

It should be possible to distinguish whether a piece of content has been created by a human, by an AI, or jointly with the help of an AI and a human being. The problem is of even greater importance for creators. In case one creates something worth his/her attention, be it an image, design, written material, video or social media posts, there needs to be a way to prove one's authorship over the creation.

As AI develops further, human-created content may start to become more valuable, but people should have the ability to prove that they created something and that their content is valid.

### How does Numbers Protocol work?

This can be explained concisely in three steps: capture, certify, and verify.

To begin with, one must capture the content. In this example, the content would be captured by taking a photograph using the application "Capture". As soon as that is done, data like the device used, timestamp, location, among other contextual data would have been captured.

To certify the content, one should make sure that the content is registered on Numbers Network. This creates an immutable log of that information. This gives the content an easily traceable chain of events.

To verify the content, when someone views a photo or video online and wishes to know its origin, they could use our Verify tool. They will upload the content and be able to check details like the author of the content, the time it was created, and its history.

Therefore, there is no need to guess if the content is authentic, modified, AI-generated, or misquoted.

### What makes this different from ordinary metadata?

While normal metadata might be valuable, it can also be removed or tampered with. For example, there are certain platforms that are capable of detecting AI-made content according to C2PA standards. The upside is that this allows recognizing that an image has been created using some kind of AI model.

 On the downside, such data can sometimes vanish after a file undergoes any process, such as uploading and then downloading it again through another software program.

That is why blockchain technology has to be incorporated into our infrastructure as well. Specifically, we use ERC-7053, which makes it possible to append additional data to the history of content creation and upload in a blockchain record. As a result, the reliability of the provenance layer can be improved due to the nature of blockchain records.

We aim at complementing rather than replacing current practices. While C2PA provides description of the content, on-chain data will allow preserving its history.

### Who needs provenance infrastructure the most?

All users of digital content creation will benefit from provenance. Artists, writers, photographers, journalists, or people who are creating digital media need a way to prove the ownership of their creations.

There were users we worked with who had problems due to their works being used without permission. In cases where there was proof of copyright infringement, it is still difficult to prove ownership in legal settings. There were even claims that works were used in order to train AI models.

Provenance allows registering the media from the time of its creation, making the process of proving ownership much easier.

AI companies also need provenance because new regulations will require them to show where the data came from, and whether the creator was compensated for their work.

Provenance is also needed in the field of journalism. Although it is a photograph taken at the right place and at the right time, it does not make it true if the context of its usage is false.

### How can Numbers Protocol help journalists and media teams?

The other crucial scenario for the use of provenance is journalism.

When dealing with breaking news, political elections, social protests, war zones, and conflicts, pictures and videos can be distributed rapidly. But there are always some risks when you want to use the actual content, as the latter can be manipulated easily. For instance, an old picture can suddenly become relevant to current news, while a video shot somewhere else can pretend to capture recent happenings.

Provenance allows journalists to establish the source and history of media files. It can identify the author of content and provide information about when and where the particular image was created.

It can be really helpful for photojournalists who have to document events in war zones because they need to confirm authenticity and integrity of the created content.

In our collaboration with photojournalists and other media organizations, we have seen how powerful provenance could be to support integrity and reliability of news stories.

### What partnerships or ecosystem initiatives are important for Numbers Protocol?

We collaborate with content creators, media firms, copyright societies, and infrastructure builders.

One such effort was called the Creative Origin Alliance. The effort involves associations that value content provenance, creators' rights, and authenticity of media content. A good example is the Design and Artists Copyright Society of the UK.

Our efforts include collaboration with photojournalists, media associations, and even firms based in Taiwan. Provenance is especially valuable to news organizations since their content is usually repurposed by other firms.

Finally, we have made great efforts in expanding upon our Numbers Network infrastructure. Specifically, there is a program geared towards innovative ideas and products that use our infrastructure. The first iteration required relatively strict conditions, focusing primarily on provenance.

However, we expanded this initiative significantly. Today, anyone who can demonstrate the utility of working with Numbers Network can join the program. This is important since the provenance infrastructure gets reinforced when used by many people.

### What role does the NUM token play in the ecosystem?

NUM is employed internally by Numbers Network.

Anything that involves working with the protocol requires the use of NUM. For instance, capturing photos using Capture, registration of contents, appending metadata using ERC-7053, editing, or engaging with the Verify engine may need NUM.

Therefore, this token is involved in activities within the protocol. It is not just limited to being a marketable token. It facilitates activities within the infrastructure for provenance.

Finally, Numbers Protocol itself has existed for quite some time now, meaning that the majority of the vesting for the original tokens have taken place. We also burn NUM quarterly until the number of tokens drops to 50% of the original number of tokens.

There is also staking available, and sometimes, we organize community-based events where participants can win NUM tokens.

### How do you see the future of Numbers Protocol?

The future is in terms of provenance infrastructure for humans and AI alike.

In today's world, it may be tempting to focus on provenance in terms of creators, media houses, and content in general. However, in the coming years, AI agents too will require some sort of provenance in order to prove their credentials.

As automation increases and more work is done through AI, humans will have to know how an AI agent got to its conclusion or came up with whatever result it did. The whole process needs to be clear and provable if the AI agent is doing anything, from producing content to making decisions.

This is why Numbers Protocol could be considered an audit layer for AI agents. While humans may still make choices themselves, those choices will benefit from understanding how the AI process led up to those decisions.

### What is the main message you want users and creators to remember?

If you add value, then you should be able to show that it's your value.

After all, every single person in the audience is human -- not some AI agent. People make stuff. They write stuff, design stuff, and capture stuff through photographs and designs. All of that is valuable.

However, the problem is that the increasing adoption of AI technology makes it increasingly difficult to prove the difference between human-made and machine-made content. And this is why it is necessary for the creator of this content to start thinking about provenance.

Numbers Protocol is just one way out of many. The point is, you need to do something.

And, if you truly value the content you've created, then find a way to prove that it's yours.

Tokenized stocks are one of the topics in the real world asset space which is getting the most attention now. With traditional finance coming increasingly closer to blockchain technology, more platforms are researching how they can tokenize their stocks on the blockchain.

In its simplest form, tokenized  stocks are tokens issued using blockchain technology which give exposure to various stocks of companies like Apple, Tesla, Nvidia, and Microsoft. Instead of purchasing stocks through an exchange from a broker, users would purchase a token which tracks the value of the stock.

It should be noted that not all tokenized  stocks have the same nature. The Exolix Roundtable held its first pilot episode on 03.06.2026, bringing together guests from ShopinBit, Dash, Dogelon Mars, Pirate Chain, and Hive for an open discussion about the place of cryptocurrencies in popular culture. This pilot marked a departure from the usual themes of markets and products, instead exploring cryptocurrency through a different angle: the depictions in films, TV, fiction, press, video games, and popular media. In addition to discussing how accurate these depictions were, the conversation also considered how they affected people's perceptions of the whole industry.

From the earliest mentions of Bitcoin on television to stories about FTX, Quadriga, privacy coins, books for kids, and even crypto crimes, there was no shortage of material on this fascinating topic.

### How do people outside crypto usually discover the industry?

Very few individuals learn about cryptocurrencies from the whitepaper or by using a wallet for themselves. Normally, one's initial exposure to the subject comes from a news item, movie, documentary, or someone else making or losing massive amounts of money.

It is important because one's initial perception lasts for a very long time. Thus, if an individual learns about cryptocurrency through FTX or any other negative news, he or she will automatically start viewing all cryptocurrencies in a negative light.

For crypto enthusiasts, topics include self-custody, payments, freedom, privacy, ownership, and decentralization. However, for outsiders, cryptocurrencies remain something mysterious, risky, and sometimes even linked to scams. Closing such a gap remains one of the largest barriers at the moment.

It is worth remembering that cryptocurrency is more than technology -- it's culture too. And people need not just to understand the technology but the purpose behind it.

### What early crypto references in TV shows stood out to you?

A good example of the early use of Bitcoin can be found in The Good Wife, where an episode with a fictional Satoshi Nakamoto was aired around 2012. The show clearly reflects how bitcoin was regarded at the time - weird, nerdy, legally uncertain, and difficult to comprehend by regular users.

Nevertheless, at that time, the attempts of writers to use Bitcoin as the subject matter of their plot were clearly visible. They did not understand the technology well enough, but they recognized the newness and the cultural importance of this concept.

Mr. Robot, on the other hand, provides a better example of a TV series that deals with digital currencies, digital money, financial control, surveillance, and cybersecurity in general. Rather than using Bitcoin simply as another form of "cybercriminal money," Mr. Robot explores the topic of digital currencies as part of a discussion on power and control.

Such an interpretation seems more productive to me since cryptocurrency involves many aspects other than the exchange itself, such as control over money and infrastructure.

### Which crypto-related show felt more accurate?

Silicon Valley may have been one of the best. While it was certainly entertaining, it definitely knew more about the culture of tech startups than any other series I've seen.

In part because it was honest about the fact that crypto isn't magical. Instead, the show included all the elements that are so common in reality - the founder's ego, the hype, the technical ambitions and ridiculous ideas, the funding pressures, etc. For anyone who worked in technology, many aspects were quite recognizable.

It helped that everything related to crypto was relatively realistic and that even small details such as the information on the whiteboard in the background were correct.

Many other TV shows use crypto as shorthand for "hacker," "ransom," or "hidden money." Silicon Valley was not one of them, mainly because the creators of the series understood how the industry is sometimes insane, but always real.

### Why is crypto so often connected with crime in movies and media?

Cryptocurrency is always associated with a good story.

If you are writing a script for a movie or some news article, thefts, hackers, scandals, losses will get your story much better attention compared to such stories as remittances, self-custody, payments rails, or open-source infrastructure.

For that reason, there can be quite negative connotations connected to the cryptocurrency. For example, ransoms by Bitcoin, a hacker attack on an exchange, a criminal wallet, an enigmatic creator of some coins, a person who lost all their savings, etc. All these things are sensational.

Unfortunately, that is how we create the perception of the cryptocurrency world. Indeed, there are various fraud cases, and sometimes people lose their savings. FTX, Terra/Luna, Celsius, Mt. Gox, and Quadriga - are well-known companies whose owners were cheating people.

However, not everything here is bad. People have been creating legitimate payment infrastructure, privacy infrastructure, wallets, exchanges, decentralized communities, social protocols, or new financial products instead of broken traditional finance.

### Why is Bitcoin privacy so misunderstood?

However, many people still believe that Bitcoin transactions are anonymous, which is incorrect. Bitcoin transactions are transparent and recorded in the public ledger.

At the same time, it does not mean that all wallets will have a name associated with them right away. Once the address becomes related to someone's identity, company, exchange account or any other publicly known information, it will be easy to track the history of transactions made from that address.

This fact explains the misleading image created by Bitcoin in Hollywood films. Bitcoin is advertised as a perfect currency for any criminal activity while it is far more traceable and identifiable than the audience understands.

### How did books and journalism influence crypto's public image?

The power of books and longform journalism, as opposed to the power of short news headlines, lies in their ability to frame our view of something in its entirety.

Number Go Up by Zeke Faux, for instance, is special in its approach in exploring crypto. Instead of using insider knowledge about the industry, Faux writes from an outsider's perspective, getting deep into the crypto culture, riding the NFT hype, checking up on celebrities, traveling, investigating, and trying to understand the crypto mindset.

While such a style may be uncomfortable for crypto aficionados, it serves a good purpose: illustrating how peculiar the whole crypto ecosystem looks from the outside.

Another example of influential books within crypto is Michael Lewis's book on Sam Bankman-Fried. All the controversy surrounding the publication had to do with the author's portrayal of SBF. It was said that he made SBF come across too sympathetic, making him appear more as a gifted individual who simply made a few big mistakes rather than someone who actually did harm.

Such publications have cultural value: they form part of crypto's memory and perception of crypto as such.

### How are gaming and crypto connected culturally?

This makes the game the clear entry point into crypto, as gamers understand the concept of digital assets.

Prior to non-fungible tokens going mainstream, gaming communities were trading, buying, collecting and trading valuable digital assets. These included skins, in-game currencies, rare items, and even digital marketplace features.

Even Mt. Gox started out as a place to trade Magic: The Gathering Online cards. This fact speaks volumes. The early crypto scene was heavily connected to internet culture and the collection and trading of digital assets.

That's why there have been multiple discussions about games within cryptocurrency circles. There certainly have been many failed projects in the space. But the environment seems fitting, considering gamers understand digital assets.

The question is to build games where digital assets serve to enhance the user experience.

### Why did children's books about Bitcoin come up?

Children's literature has arisen due to their depiction of the complete opposite of the cryptocurrency world. Examples of children's crypto literature include Goodnight Bitcoin and B Is For Bitcoin. The primary focus here is not on crypto trading and predicting market movements but instead on explaining crypto basics, savings, and financial literacy in an understandable manner.

This is relevant since cryptocurrencies themselves remain a complex topic for most individuals who may struggle to comprehend digital wallets, private keys, blockchain technology, and ownership.

However, this means that we require educational solutions beyond those targeted only at adults. We must teach young people financial literacy since younger generations will inevitably grow up around digital transactions, crypto assets, artificial intelligence, and digital wallets, even digital currencies.

Thus, the issue at hand is not whether children should be told about such concepts but rather whether we could do it responsibly.

### What did scandals like FTX and Quadriga do to crypto's reputation?

They have caused significant damage.

FTX was especially destructive since it was not some minor, obscure endeavor. It featured well-known individuals, massive institutions, politics, branding, and credibility. The collapse of FTX has made many non-crypto users think that the entire industry must be fraud and a scam.

Quadriga has shaken the industry differently, specifically in Canada. There were mysteries, missing money, bad management practices, the death of the founder, and a myriad of unresolved issues. The latter is one of those stories that will remain remembered due to their bizarre nature.

However, one should realize that any such a massive failure is enough to ruin the effect that other success stories can have. Legitimate developers of applications may waste years developing tools that can be used by many users, yet a scam would overshadow all of that.

Finally, one should mention that the industry cannot simply put the blame on journalists. Indeed, scams take place, and fraudulent activities happen all the time. However, they negatively impact the legitimate sector of the business.

### Is crypto's image getting better?

Sure, slowly.

Crypto is still known for scams, crashes, and speculation, but at the same time, it is starting to seem more conventional. Today, people discuss the possibilities of cryptocurrency ETFs, regulations, stable coins, payment solutions, decentralized ownership, and the blockchain infrastructure itself.

However, this does not imply that people know anything about it properly. Nevertheless, crypto is no longer just some weird internet-based phenomenon. This technology has finally entered the sphere of finance and politics.

The most crucial question is whether we want the crypto to become a part of mainstream. In case crypto becomes just another asset class under the control of financial institutions, something crucial would be left out.

The ideal scenario would be when crypto becomes more user-friendly while still retaining all its unique features, such as self-custody, anonymity, access for everyone, resistance to censorship, etc.

### What kind of crypto stories should exist more often?

We require narratives of crypto as being useful and relevant.

Not just narratives of individuals becoming wealthy. Not just narratives of scams and frauds. Nor narratives of crime. And certainly not promotional narratives.

We require narratives where the use of crypto arises because of a dysfunctionality in the local financial system. We require narratives of privacy, remittances, creator ownership, digital identity, and self custody in lieu of dependence on the banking or centralized exchange system.

Such stories will be less spectacular than the implosion of a billion dollar enterprise, but far more relevant to the real-world use cases.

The adoption of cryptocurrency is about the development of superior products. But more importantly, it is about the human rationale for those products.

The network enables smart contracts to fetch information that resides off-chain, such as asset prices, sports scores, weather updates, random numbers, and external API information.

This becomes very important considering the fact that smart contracts cannot fetch any off-chain information by themselves. An example of such a scenario can include a lending application fetching token prices from the blockchain. Another example can involve a prediction market application fetching event outcome information.

A derivatives platform, for instance, would require some form of reliable market information. With Band, all these requirements become possible through the creation of an infrastructure layer for data requests.

Why Oracles Matter in Blockchain

The capabilities of blockchains are highly efficient for keeping and processing information within their systems. Nonetheless, they are disconnected from any processes happening outside the blockchain network by definition. This is referred to as the oracle problem.

Even though the actions defined by a smart contract can be performed according to programmed logic, accurate data is required for them to be executed properly. Incorrect or outdated data can make a smart contract fail in its task.

Examples of the fields requiring the use of oracle networks include:

-   Decentralized finance (DeFi) lending/borrowing platforms which require asset prices

-   Derivatives platforms operating based on market data

-   Prediction markets which require data about events' results

-   Insurance projects depending on any trigger in the physical world

-   Gaming or non-fungible token (NFT)-related projects requiring randomness or other data

That is why the infrastructure for receiving real-world information to the blockchain has become another layer of blockchain technologies.

How Band Works

Band utilizes BandChain, which is an independent blockchain network created using the Cosmos SDK. BandChain is specifically tailored towards handling oracle-related functions such as fetching, aggregating, and settling data.

In cases where a decentralized application requires external data, it places an order through Band, after which validators working within the BandChain network fetch the data from the appropriate data sources, perform the aggregations, and return the data to the smart contract making the request.

Typically, the process involves four stages:

1.  A dApp requests some off-chain data.

2.  BandChain's validators collect data from the data sources.

3.  The collected data is then aggregated based on the oracle script.

4.  Finally, the output is returned to the smart contract.

Oracle scripts are created by developers and specify what type of data is needed, where to source the data from, how to process the collected data, and how to return the output.

The Role of BAND Token

BAND is the native coin of BandChain, the Band blockchain platform. It ensures the security of the network and provides incentives for validators and other members of the blockchain.

The validators stake their BAND to join the network and fulfill the requests regarding data from oracle services. They can receive rewards for their activities and help ensure the security of the network. The users can stake their tokens with the validators they trust to receive rewards from securing the network as well..

This system is based on the concept of Delegated Proof-of-Stake. The validators should work correctly, because of the aligned incentives.
