This pilot marked a departure from the usual themes of markets and products, instead exploring cryptocurrency through a different angle: the depictions in films, TV, fiction, press, video games, and popular media. In addition to discussing how accurate these depictions were, the conversation also considered how they affected people's perceptions of the whole industry.

From the earliest mentions of Bitcoin on television to stories about FTX, Quadriga, privacy coins, books for kids, and even crypto crimes, there was no shortage of material on this fascinating topic.

### How do people outside crypto usually discover the industry?

Very few individuals learn about cryptocurrencies from the whitepaper or by using a wallet for themselves. Normally, one's initial exposure to the subject comes from a news item, movie, documentary, or someone else making or losing massive amounts of money.

It is important because one's initial perception lasts for a very long time. Thus, if an individual learns about cryptocurrency through FTX or any other negative news, he or she will automatically start viewing all cryptocurrencies in a negative light.

For crypto enthusiasts, topics include self-custody, payments, freedom, privacy, ownership, and decentralization. However, for outsiders, cryptocurrencies remain something mysterious, risky, and sometimes even linked to scams. Closing such a gap remains one of the largest barriers at the moment.

It is worth remembering that cryptocurrency is more than technology -- it's culture too. And people need not just to understand the technology but the purpose behind it.

### What early crypto references in TV shows stood out to you?

A good example of the early use of Bitcoin can be found in The Good Wife, where an episode with a fictional Satoshi Nakamoto was aired around 2012. The show clearly reflects how bitcoin was regarded at the time - weird, nerdy, legally uncertain, and difficult to comprehend by regular users.

Nevertheless, at that time, the attempts of writers to use Bitcoin as the subject matter of their plot were clearly visible. They did not understand the technology well enough, but they recognized the newness and the cultural importance of this concept.

Mr. Robot, on the other hand, provides a better example of a TV series that deals with digital currencies, digital money, financial control, surveillance, and cybersecurity in general. Rather than using Bitcoin simply as another form of "cybercriminal money," Mr. Robot explores the topic of digital currencies as part of a discussion on power and control.

Such an interpretation seems more productive to me since cryptocurrency involves many aspects other than the exchange itself, such as control over money and infrastructure.

### Which crypto-related show felt more accurate?

Silicon Valley may have been one of the best. While it was certainly entertaining, it definitely knew more about the culture of tech startups than any other series I've seen.

In part because it was honest about the fact that crypto isn't magical. Instead, the show included all the elements that are so common in reality - the founder's ego, the hype, the technical ambitions and ridiculous ideas, the funding pressures, etc. For anyone who worked in technology, many aspects were quite recognizable.

It helped that everything related to crypto was relatively realistic and that even small details such as the information on the whiteboard in the background were correct.

Many other TV shows use crypto as shorthand for "hacker," "ransom," or "hidden money." Silicon Valley was not one of them, mainly because the creators of the series understood how the industry is sometimes insane, but always real.

### Why is crypto so often connected with crime in movies and media?

Cryptocurrency is always associated with a good story.

If you are writing a script for a movie or some news article, thefts, hackers, scandals, losses will get your story much better attention compared to such stories as remittances, self-custody, payments rails, or open-source infrastructure.

For that reason, there can be quite negative connotations connected to the cryptocurrency. For example, ransoms by Bitcoin, a hacker attack on an exchange, a criminal wallet, an enigmatic creator of some coins, a person who lost all their savings, etc. All these things are sensational.

Unfortunately, that is how we create the perception of the cryptocurrency world. Indeed, there are various fraud cases, and sometimes people lose their savings. FTX, Terra/Luna, Celsius, Mt. Gox, and Quadriga - are well-known companies whose owners were cheating people.

However, not everything here is bad. People have been creating legitimate payment infrastructure, privacy infrastructure, wallets, exchanges, decentralized communities, social protocols, or new financial products instead of broken traditional finance.

### Why is Bitcoin privacy so misunderstood?

However, many people still believe that Bitcoin transactions are anonymous, which is incorrect. Bitcoin transactions are transparent and recorded in the public ledger.

At the same time, it does not mean that all wallets will have a name associated with them right away. Once the address becomes related to someone's identity, company, exchange account or any other publicly known information, it will be easy to track the history of transactions made from that address.

This fact explains the misleading image created by Bitcoin in Hollywood films. Bitcoin is advertised as a perfect currency for any criminal activity while it is far more traceable and identifiable than the audience understands.

Another reason is that the discussion about privacy should be taken into consideration. The term 'privacy' is not equal to something suspicious. In traditional finance, no one would consider making all payments, salaries, accounts, donations or deals transparent and accessible to the public.

The issue is important because it allows protecting everyone who needs to keep personal financial details private. This message is far from the one conveyed by mass media sources.

### How did books and journalism influence crypto's public image?

The power of books and longform journalism, as opposed to the power of short news headlines, lies in their ability to frame our view of something in its entirety.

Number Go Up by Zeke Faux, for instance, is special in its approach in exploring crypto. Instead of using insider knowledge about the industry, Faux writes from an outsider's perspective, getting deep into the crypto culture, riding the NFT hype, checking up on celebrities, traveling, investigating, and trying to understand the crypto mindset.

While such a style may be uncomfortable for crypto aficionados, it serves a good purpose: illustrating how peculiar the whole crypto ecosystem looks from the outside.

Another example of influential books within crypto is Michael Lewis's book on Sam Bankman-Fried. All the controversy surrounding the publication had to do with the author's portrayal of SBF. It was said that he made SBF come across too sympathetic, making him appear more as a gifted individual who simply made a few big mistakes rather than someone who actually did harm.

Such publications have cultural value: they form part of crypto's memory and perception of crypto as such.

### How are gaming and crypto connected culturally?

This makes the game the clear entry point into crypto, as gamers understand the concept of digital assets.

Prior to non-fungible tokens going mainstream, gaming communities were trading, buying, collecting and trading valuable digital assets. These included skins, in-game currencies, rare items, and even digital marketplace features.

Even Mt. Gox started out as a place to trade Magic: The Gathering Online cards. This fact speaks volumes. The early crypto scene was heavily connected to internet culture and the collection and trading of digital assets.

That's why there have been multiple discussions about games within cryptocurrency circles. There certainly have been many failed projects in the space. But the environment seems fitting, considering gamers understand digital assets.

The question is to build games where digital assets serve to enhance the user experience.

### Why did children's books about Bitcoin come up?

Children's literature has arisen due to their depiction of the complete opposite of the cryptocurrency world. Examples of children's crypto literature include Goodnight Bitcoin and B Is For Bitcoin. The primary focus here is not on crypto trading and predicting market movements but instead on explaining crypto basics, savings, and financial literacy in an understandable manner.

This is relevant since cryptocurrencies themselves remain a complex topic for most individuals who may struggle to comprehend digital wallets, private keys, blockchain technology, and ownership.

However, this means that we require educational solutions beyond those targeted only at adults. We must teach young people financial literacy since younger generations will inevitably grow up around digital transactions, crypto assets, artificial intelligence, and digital wallets, even digital currencies.

Thus, the issue at hand is not whether children should be told about such concepts but rather whether we could do it responsibly.

### What did scandals like FTX and Quadriga do to crypto's reputation?

They have caused significant damage.

FTX was especially destructive since it was not some minor, obscure endeavor. It featured well-known individuals, massive institutions, politics, branding, and credibility. The collapse of FTX has made many non-crypto users think that the entire industry must be fraud and a scam.

Quadriga has shaken the industry differently, specifically in Canada. There were mysteries, missing money, bad management practices, the death of the founder, and a myriad of unresolved issues. The latter is one of those stories that will remain remembered due to their bizarre nature.

However, one should realize that any such a massive failure is enough to ruin the effect that other success stories can have. Legitimate developers of applications may waste years developing tools that can be used by many users, yet a scam would overshadow all of that.

Finally, one should mention that the industry cannot simply put the blame on journalists. Indeed, scams take place, and fraudulent activities happen all the time. However, they negatively impact the legitimate sector of the business.

### Is crypto's image getting better?

Sure, slowly.

Crypto is still known for scams, crashes, and speculation, but at the same time, it is starting to seem more conventional. Today, people discuss the possibilities of cryptocurrency ETFs, regulations, stable coins, payment solutions, decentralized ownership, and the blockchain infrastructure itself.

However, this does not imply that people know anything about it properly. Nevertheless, crypto is no longer just some weird internet-based phenomenon. This technology has finally entered the sphere of finance and politics.

The most crucial question is whether we want the crypto to become a part of mainstream. In case crypto becomes just another asset class under the control of financial institutions, something crucial would be left out.

The ideal scenario would be when crypto becomes more user-friendly while still retaining all its unique features, such as self-custody, anonymity, access for everyone, resistance to censorship, etc.

### What kind of crypto stories should exist more often?

We require narratives of crypto as being useful and relevant.

Not just narratives of individuals becoming wealthy. Not just narratives of scams and frauds. Nor narratives of crime. And certainly not promotional narratives.

We require narratives where the use of crypto arises because of a dysfunctionality in the local financial system. We require narratives of privacy, remittances, creator ownership, digital identity, and self custody in lieu of dependence on the banking or centralized exchange system.

Such stories will be less spectacular than the implosion of a billion dollar enterprise, but far more relevant to the real-world use cases.

The adoption of cryptocurrency is about the development of superior products. But more importantly, it is about the human rationale for those products.

Crypto in Popular Culture: Exolix Roundtable Recap

[Band](https://exolix.com/currencies/band){:target="_blank" rel="dofollow"}  (previously known as Band Protocol) is a decentralized oracle network that links the external world to the blockchain ecosystem. The network enables smart contracts to fetch information that resides off-chain, such as asset prices, sports scores, weather updates, random numbers, and external API information.

This becomes very important considering the fact that smart contracts cannot fetch any off-chain information by themselves. An example of such a scenario can include a lending application fetching token prices from the blockchain. Another example can involve a prediction market application fetching event outcome information.

A derivatives platform, for instance, would require some form of reliable market information. With Band, all these requirements become possible through the creation of an infrastructure layer for data requests.

Why Oracles Matter in Blockchain
--------------------------------

The capabilities of blockchains are highly efficient for keeping and processing information within their systems. Nonetheless, they are disconnected from any processes happening outside the blockchain network by definition. This is referred to as the oracle problem.

Even though the actions defined by a smart contract can be performed according to programmed logic, accurate data is required for them to be executed properly. Incorrect or outdated data can make a smart contract fail in its task.

Examples of the fields requiring the use of oracle networks include:

-   Decentralized finance (DeFi) lending/borrowing platforms which require asset prices

-   Derivatives platforms operating based on market data

-   Prediction markets which require data about events' results

-   Insurance projects depending on any trigger in the physical world

-   Gaming or non-fungible token (NFT)-related projects requiring randomness or other data

That is why the infrastructure for receiving real-world information to the blockchain has become another layer of blockchain technologies.

How Band Works
--------------

Band utilizes BandChain, which is an independent blockchain network created using the Cosmos SDK. BandChain is specifically tailored towards handling oracle-related functions such as fetching, aggregating, and settling data.

In cases where a decentralized application requires external data, it places an order through Band, after which validators working within the BandChain network fetch the data from the appropriate data sources, perform the aggregations, and return the data to the smart contract making the request.

Typically, the process involves four stages:

1.  A dApp requests some off-chain data.

2.  BandChain's validators collect data from the data sources.

3.  The collected data is then aggregated based on the oracle script.

4.  Finally, the output is returned to the smart contract.

Oracle scripts are created by developers and specify what type of data is needed, where to source the data from, how to process the collected data, and how to return the output.

The Role of BAND Token
----------------------

BAND is the native coin of BandChain, the Band blockchain platform. It ensures the security of the network and provides incentives for validators and other members of the blockchain.

The validators stake their BAND to join the network and fulfill the requests regarding data from oracle services. They can receive rewards for their activities and help ensure the security of the network. The users can stake their tokens with the validators they trust to receive rewards from securing the network as well..

This system is based on the concept of Delegated Proof-of-Stake. The validators should work correctly, because of the aligned incentives. 

Building the Data Layer for Web3

Band is one of the pieces of infrastructure that facilitates blockchain application connectivity with the physical world. Band facilitates connectivity between APIs and data feeds, helping in making smart contracts more practical.

Band does this by ensuring security on the network and aligning incentives for the different parties involved; validators, delegators, developers, and users.

With cryptocurrencies becoming increasingly multichain, the importance of having a secure data infrastructure becomes ever greater. The role played by Band is therefore to ensure that external data is available and verifiable.

In addition to facilitating transactions, staking activities, governance participation, and use in DeFi apps and other processes, it plays a role in wider activities across the network. Initially, BNB had a maximum total supply of 200 million coins issued. Since no new tokens are created by mining activities, the BNB chain relies on the supply reduction strategy, with the overall goal of decreasing the amount of coins in circulation down to 100 million BNB.

According to statistics, following the completion of the 35th quarterly Auto-Burn process in April 2026, the BNB Chain currently holds a total supply of about 134.79 million BNB. Still, this figure continues to change as more Auto-Burn processes take place on a quarterly basis, as well as due to constant real-time gas fee burning.

How Many BNB Coins Are There in Circulation?
--------------------------------------------

According to the latest BNB Chain burn report for Q1'26, as reported in April 2026, the current total supply amounts to roughly 134.79 million BNB tokens. The number shown in circulation might be somewhat different as a result of ongoing BNB removal from circulation via the real-time burning process following every supply snapshot quarter.

In other words, the current answer to the question about how many BNB coins are there differs depending on the time of reporting. The cryptocurrency BNB uses a non-inflationary supply model and does not mint additional supply gradually; instead, its total supply is being reduced continuously due to token burns.

At launch, BNB had an initial supply of 200 million tokens. Nonetheless, BNB was created based on the idea of burning which involves removal of BNB tokens from circulation. Ultimately, the goal is to lower down the total supply to a maximum of 100 million BNB.

Therefore, 100 million BNB is not a maximum supply for issuance like Bitcoin's 21 million BTC. BNB was launched with a higher supply but is being reduced through burns.

BNB does not engage in mining to generate new coins. The token economics of BNB are centered on lowering supply, not coin generation. Every burn process that is successful reduces a fixed supply of BNB tokens from circulation, whereas real-time burning entails the destruction of some gas fees paid using BNB Smart Chain.

The auto-burn project according to BNB Chain will continue burning tokens until there is only 100 million BNB remaining in total supply. The concept of decreasing supply is crucial in comprehending the number of BNB coins that currently exist, as well as why the number keeps changing.

How BNB Supply Has Changed Since Launch

### From Exchange Token to Network Asset

The original BNB project was built as a utility coin that had its use cases tied to the Binance ecosystem. The initial use cases included discounted trading fees and access to some specific platform functionality.

As time went by, BNB evolved into the native asset that powers all of BNB Chain. At present, it is being utilized for BNB Smart Chain transaction fees, staking activities, decentralized applications, on-chain trading, gaming, and any other Web3 use case deployed in the larger ecosystem.

What this implies is that the current supply mechanism of BNB is not solely tied to the story of an exchange token. The addition of real-time fee burns means that BNB activities on BNB Smart Chain are now able to burn the coin from circulation as well.

### A Declining Supply by Design

By April 2026, over 65 million BNB had already been burned from an initial 200 million BNB supply, resulting in approximately 134.79 million BNB as per the latest official Binance quarterly burn report.

Nevertheless, having a reduced supply doesn't necessarily define the market value. The value of BNB depends on other factors such as network activity, liquidity, market conditions, development, security, and increased demand in general for blockchain activities.

What is achieved by the burn system is the availability of a defined supply system in which there are initially 200 million BNB, and there is a continuous burning of BNB until reaching 100 million BNB.

How BNB Burns Reduce the Supply

BNB burns ensure that the asset becomes permanently irretrievable. Once the coin has been burned, it can never be spent, returned into circulation, or used anywhere within the ecosystem. That is how the asset makes its way from an initial total of 200 million units down to 100 million.

Currently, there are two major methods of burning BNB to reduce its supply: the quarterly BNB Auto-Burn and a burn linked directly to transactions within BNB Smart Chain.

### BNB Auto-Burn

The Auto-Burn process ensures that an estimated number of tokens is burned every three months. Unlike prior BNB burns, which were tied to activity on Binance Exchange, the latest burns occur separately from the exchange.

The two key parameters in calculating how many tokens will need to be burned under the Auto-Burn method are:

-   the value of the token at a particular time

-   the number of blocks created on BNB Smart Chain during the period

These factors help in making the burn process more visible and easier to verify independently. After calculating the burn amount, the appropriate quantity of tokens is then transferred to the burn address, where it is no longer available for use.

As far as we know, the BNB Auto-Burn process will run until only 100 million BNB tokens remain.

### Real-Time Burn Through BEP-95

Supply for BNB is also curtailed by the network usage aspect. Through BEP-95, the real-time burning system helps remove some gas fees in exchange for BNB collected on BNB Smart Chain.

Each time a user engages in activities on the network, either by transferring assets or even trading through various DApps, they end up paying gas fees in terms of BNB. Through BEP-95, a certain proportion of those gas fees will be burned rather than staying within the scope of validator rewards.

### Why Do We Need Both Burning Systems

While the functions are somewhat similar, there is no doubt that the two models operate differently. While auto-burn makes sure that BNB supply gradually goes to 100 million through a predictable model, real-time burning associates the burning of some of the BNB supply with its active usage on the chain.

It should be pointed out that the process of burning tokens is not always associated with an increase in price and demand for them. It depends on several factors including the state of the crypto space and the utility of BNB Chain products.

Circulating Supply vs Total Supply vs Max Supply
------------------------------------------------

When investigating the total number of BNB coins available, users can obtain various results depending on market analytics tools, blockchain explorers, or official news by BNB Chain. However, these differences do not imply inconsistency because they can relate to different types of BNB coins.

### Circulating Supply

The circulating supply denotes the quantity of coins available in the market. This figure is calculated using specific methods; therefore, there can be discrepancies between different data sources. As far as BNB is concerned, the figure will vary because the tokens can be withdrawn from the market.

### Total Supply

The total supply is defined as the quantity of coins that already exist minus the burned ones. After the 35th quarter burning process conducted in April 2026, the total supply of BNB coins amounted to 134.79 million BNB.

### Maximum Supply and Burn Target

More explanation is needed regarding the BNB max supply. While BNB initially had an original supply of 200 million tokens, its burn mechanism would eventually bring down the supply to 100 million BNB.

Hence, the following are some figures related to BNB supply:

-   Original BNB supply (number of coins) of 200 million;

-   Long-term supply of 100 million BNB after burning all of them.

It is important to note that there is no creation of new BNB supply via mining, meaning that once burned, the coin becomes non-existent.

### Why There May Be Different Supply Numbers

The supply number that is reported after a burn event represents the current supply at that particular point in time. However, since burns still happen in real time whenever users make transactions using the BNB Smart Chain, supply information may vary based on the frequency of updates done by marketplaces themselves.

This means that the best way to answer the question about BNB supply is that there isn't any single figure for the current supply but that it continues to decline through burns.

Why BNB Supply Matters for Crypto Users
---------------------------------------

Suppy is just one aspect of assessing a cryptocurrency, but it certainly plays its own part in the process of examining the structure of the asset. In relation to BNB, the key idea here is that the number of coins available is destined to shrink instead of growing due to new releases.

From the user's perspective, it means that unlike many cryptocurrencies that generate new tokens due to network rewards, the burning of BNB removes them from the circulation permanently. At the same time, the asset is actively used as a payment instrument in relation to various services available on BNB Chain.

The shrinking supply of an asset can be appealing because the coin gets rarer. Nevertheless, the shrinking of the number of coins does not imply that an asset will be useful and profitable in the future.

### Supply and Network Utility Work Together

Tokenomics of BNB depend on the function of this token within the blockchain network. Users require BNB tokens to pay for gas fees whenever they interact with applications on BNB Smart Chain. The development teams use the network for building products including decentralized exchanges, lending services, gaming, NFT projects, and others.

The connection of the two is established through the real-time burning mechanism. While the network is being used, a certain percentage of the fees will be permanently destroyed. That means that the burning of BNB not only takes place regularly but also occurs in relation to the activity within the chain.

Thus, the list of issues which are crucial to understanding BNB includes:

-   the attractiveness of the ecosystem in terms of ongoing activities

-   the impact of quarterly and real-time burning on the leftover supply

-   the application of BNB throughout the network

risks associated with volatility, smart contracts, and the crypto market in general.

While the number of BNB coins available gives important information, it should not be considered separately from the other issues mentioned above. The future of the token will be determined by the interdependence of its supply reduction and user demand.

I am Luis, and I come from Mexico. Currently, I am working as the Chief Growth Officer for Gear Foundation, which is responsible for creating the Vara Network. As you can guess, my responsibility consists of helping our company grow, establishing partnerships, and informing builders and communities about what we have been building.

The Vara Network is a Layer 1 blockchain project with a very precise technical approach. We aim to build a network based on four main pillars: parallel computation, asynchronous messaging, persistent memory, and easy application development. Our goal is to build an infrastructure which would be very similar to Web2, but also include all benefits of Web3.

It is helpful to know about the background of the team behind Vara to get a better understanding of the project. Its creator, Nikolai Wolf, is an experienced professional within blockchain infrastructure.
