This pilot marked a departure from the usual themes of markets and products, instead exploring cryptocurrency through a different angle: the depictions in films, TV, fiction, press, video games, and popular media. In addition to discussing how accurate these depictions were, the conversation also considered how they affected people's perceptions of the whole industry.

From the earliest mentions of Bitcoin on television to stories about FTX, Quadriga, privacy coins, books for kids, and even crypto crimes, there was no shortage of material on this fascinating topic.

### How do people outside crypto usually discover the industry?

Very few individuals learn about cryptocurrencies from the whitepaper or by using a wallet for themselves. Normally, one's initial exposure to the subject comes from a news item, movie, documentary, or someone else making or losing massive amounts of money.

It is important because one's initial perception lasts for a very long time. Thus, if an individual learns about cryptocurrency through FTX or any other negative news, he or she will automatically start viewing all cryptocurrencies in a negative light.

For crypto enthusiasts, topics include self-custody, payments, freedom, privacy, ownership, and decentralization. However, for outsiders, cryptocurrencies remain something mysterious, risky, and sometimes even linked to scams. Closing such a gap remains one of the largest barriers at the moment.

It is worth remembering that cryptocurrency is more than technology -- it's culture too. And people need not just to understand the technology but the purpose behind it.

### What early crypto references in TV shows stood out to you?

A good example of the early use of Bitcoin can be found in The Good Wife, where an episode with a fictional Satoshi Nakamoto was aired around 2012. The show clearly reflects how bitcoin was regarded at the time - weird, nerdy, legally uncertain, and difficult to comprehend by regular users.

Nevertheless, at that time, the attempts of writers to use Bitcoin as the subject matter of their plot were clearly visible. They did not understand the technology well enough, but they recognized the newness and the cultural importance of this concept.

Mr. Robot, on the other hand, provides a better example of a TV series that deals with digital currencies, digital money, financial control, surveillance, and cybersecurity in general. Rather than using Bitcoin simply as another form of "cybercriminal money," Mr. Robot explores the topic of digital currencies as part of a discussion on power and control.

Such an interpretation seems more productive to me since cryptocurrency involves many aspects other than the exchange itself, such as control over money and infrastructure.

### Which crypto-related show felt more accurate?

Silicon Valley may have been one of the best. While it was certainly entertaining, it definitely knew more about the culture of tech startups than any other series I've seen.

In part because it was honest about the fact that crypto isn't magical. Instead, the show included all the elements that are so common in reality - the founder's ego, the hype, the technical ambitions and ridiculous ideas, the funding pressures, etc. For anyone who worked in technology, many aspects were quite recognizable.

It helped that everything related to crypto was relatively realistic and that even small details such as the information on the whiteboard in the background were correct.

Many other TV shows use crypto as shorthand for "hacker," "ransom," or "hidden money." Silicon Valley was not one of them, mainly because the creators of the series understood how the industry is sometimes insane, but always real.

### Why is crypto so often connected with crime in movies and media?

Cryptocurrency is always associated with a good story.

If you are writing a script for a movie or some news article, thefts, hackers, scandals, losses will get your story much better attention compared to such stories as remittances, self-custody, payments rails, or open-source infrastructure.

For that reason, there can be quite negative connotations connected to the cryptocurrency. For example, ransoms by Bitcoin, a hacker attack on an exchange, a criminal wallet, an enigmatic creator of some coins, a person who lost all their savings, etc. All these things are sensational.

Unfortunately, that is how we create the perception of the cryptocurrency world. Indeed, there are various fraud cases, and sometimes people lose their savings. FTX, Terra/Luna, Celsius, Mt. Gox, and Quadriga - are well-known companies whose owners were cheating people.

However, not everything here is bad. People have been creating legitimate payment infrastructure, privacy infrastructure, wallets, exchanges, decentralized communities, social protocols, or new financial products instead of broken traditional finance.

### Why is Bitcoin privacy so misunderstood?

However, many people still believe that Bitcoin transactions are anonymous, which is incorrect. Bitcoin transactions are transparent and recorded in the public ledger.

At the same time, it does not mean that all wallets will have a name associated with them right away. Once the address becomes related to someone's identity, company, exchange account or any other publicly known information, it will be easy to track the history of transactions made from that address.

This fact explains the misleading image created by Bitcoin in Hollywood films. Bitcoin is advertised as a perfect currency for any criminal activity while it is far more traceable and identifiable than the audience understands.

Another reason is that the discussion about privacy should be taken into consideration. The term 'privacy' is not equal to something suspicious. In traditional finance, no one would consider making all payments, salaries, accounts, donations or deals transparent and accessible to the public.

The issue is important because it allows protecting everyone who needs to keep personal financial details private. This message is far from the one conveyed by mass media sources.

### How did books and journalism influence crypto's public image?

The power of books and longform journalism, as opposed to the power of short news headlines, lies in their ability to frame our view of something in its entirety.

Number Go Up by Zeke Faux, for instance, is special in its approach in exploring crypto. Instead of using insider knowledge about the industry, Faux writes from an outsider's perspective, getting deep into the crypto culture, riding the NFT hype, checking up on celebrities, traveling, investigating, and trying to understand the crypto mindset.

While such a style may be uncomfortable for crypto aficionados, it serves a good purpose: illustrating how peculiar the whole crypto ecosystem looks from the outside.

Another example of influential books within crypto is Michael Lewis's book on Sam Bankman-Fried. All the controversy surrounding the publication had to do with the author's portrayal of SBF. It was said that he made SBF come across too sympathetic, making him appear more as a gifted individual who simply made a few big mistakes rather than someone who actually did harm.

Such publications have cultural value: they form part of crypto's memory and perception of crypto as such.

### How are gaming and crypto connected culturally?

This makes the game the clear entry point into crypto, as gamers understand the concept of digital assets.

Prior to non-fungible tokens going mainstream, gaming communities were trading, buying, collecting and trading valuable digital assets. These included skins, in-game currencies, rare items, and even digital marketplace features.

Even Mt. Gox started out as a place to trade Magic: The Gathering Online cards. This fact speaks volumes. The early crypto scene was heavily connected to internet culture and the collection and trading of digital assets.

That's why there have been multiple discussions about games within cryptocurrency circles. There certainly have been many failed projects in the space. But the environment seems fitting, considering gamers understand digital assets.

The question is to build games where digital assets serve to enhance the user experience.

### Why did children's books about Bitcoin come up?

Children's literature has arisen due to their depiction of the complete opposite of the cryptocurrency world. Examples of children's crypto literature include Goodnight Bitcoin and B Is For Bitcoin. The primary focus here is not on crypto trading and predicting market movements but instead on explaining crypto basics, savings, and financial literacy in an understandable manner.

This is relevant since cryptocurrencies themselves remain a complex topic for most individuals who may struggle to comprehend digital wallets, private keys, blockchain technology, and ownership.

However, this means that we require educational solutions beyond those targeted only at adults. We must teach young people financial literacy since younger generations will inevitably grow up around digital transactions, crypto assets, artificial intelligence, and digital wallets, even digital currencies.

Thus, the issue at hand is not whether children should be told about such concepts but rather whether we could do it responsibly.

### What did scandals like FTX and Quadriga do to crypto's reputation?

They have caused significant damage.

FTX was especially destructive since it was not some minor, obscure endeavor. It featured well-known individuals, massive institutions, politics, branding, and credibility. The collapse of FTX has made many non-crypto users think that the entire industry must be fraud and a scam.

Quadriga has shaken the industry differently, specifically in Canada. There were mysteries, missing money, bad management practices, the death of the founder, and a myriad of unresolved issues. The latter is one of those stories that will remain remembered due to their bizarre nature.

However, one should realize that any such a massive failure is enough to ruin the effect that other success stories can have. Legitimate developers of applications may waste years developing tools that can be used by many users, yet a scam would overshadow all of that.

Finally, one should mention that the industry cannot simply put the blame on journalists. Indeed, scams take place, and fraudulent activities happen all the time. However, they negatively impact the legitimate sector of the business.

### Is crypto's image getting better?

Sure, slowly.

Crypto is still known for scams, crashes, and speculation, but at the same time, it is starting to seem more conventional. Today, people discuss the possibilities of cryptocurrency ETFs, regulations, stable coins, payment solutions, decentralized ownership, and the blockchain infrastructure itself.

However, this does not imply that people know anything about it properly. Nevertheless, crypto is no longer just some weird internet-based phenomenon. This technology has finally entered the sphere of finance and politics.

The most crucial question is whether we want the crypto to become a part of mainstream. In case crypto becomes just another asset class under the control of financial institutions, something crucial would be left out.

The ideal scenario would be when crypto becomes more user-friendly while still retaining all its unique features, such as self-custody, anonymity, access for everyone, resistance to censorship, etc.

### What kind of crypto stories should exist more often?

We require narratives of crypto as being useful and relevant.

Not just narratives of individuals becoming wealthy. Not just narratives of scams and frauds. Nor narratives of crime. And certainly not promotional narratives.

We require narratives where the use of crypto arises because of a dysfunctionality in the local financial system. We require narratives of privacy, remittances, creator ownership, digital identity, and self custody in lieu of dependence on the banking or centralized exchange system.

Such stories will be less spectacular than the implosion of a billion dollar enterprise, but far more relevant to the real-world use cases.

The adoption of cryptocurrency is about the development of superior products. But more importantly, it is about the human rationale for those products.

Crypto in Popular Culture: Exolix Roundtable Recap

[Band](https://exolix.com/currencies/band){:target="_blank" rel="dofollow"}  (previously known as Band Protocol) is a decentralized oracle network that links the external world to the blockchain ecosystem. The network enables smart contracts to fetch information that resides off-chain, such as asset prices, sports scores, weather updates, random numbers, and external API information.

This becomes very important considering the fact that smart contracts cannot fetch any off-chain information by themselves. An example of such a scenario can include a lending application fetching token prices from the blockchain. Another example can involve a prediction market application fetching event outcome information.

A derivatives platform, for instance, would require some form of reliable market information. With Band, all these requirements become possible through the creation of an infrastructure layer for data requests.

Why Oracles Matter in Blockchain
--------------------------------

The capabilities of blockchains are highly efficient for keeping and processing information within their systems. Nonetheless, they are disconnected from any processes happening outside the blockchain network by definition. This is referred to as the oracle problem.

Even though the actions defined by a smart contract can be performed according to programmed logic, accurate data is required for them to be executed properly. Incorrect or outdated data can make a smart contract fail in its task.

Examples of the fields requiring the use of oracle networks include:

-   Decentralized finance (DeFi) lending/borrowing platforms which require asset prices

-   Derivatives platforms operating based on market data

-   Prediction markets which require data about events' results

-   Insurance projects depending on any trigger in the physical world

-   Gaming or non-fungible token (NFT)-related projects requiring randomness or other data

That is why the infrastructure for receiving real-world information to the blockchain has become another layer of blockchain technologies.

How Band Works
--------------

Band utilizes BandChain, which is an independent blockchain network created using the Cosmos SDK. BandChain is specifically tailored towards handling oracle-related functions such as fetching, aggregating, and settling data.

In cases where a decentralized application requires external data, it places an order through Band, after which validators working within the BandChain network fetch the data from the appropriate data sources, perform the aggregations, and return the data to the smart contract making the request.

Typically, the process involves four stages:

1.  A dApp requests some off-chain data.

2.  BandChain's validators collect data from the data sources.

3.  The collected data is then aggregated based on the oracle script.

4.  Finally, the output is returned to the smart contract.

Oracle scripts are created by developers and specify what type of data is needed, where to source the data from, how to process the collected data, and how to return the output.

The Role of BAND Token
----------------------

BAND is the native coin of BandChain, the Band blockchain platform. It ensures the security of the network and provides incentives for validators and other members of the blockchain.

The validators stake their BAND to join the network and fulfill the requests regarding data from oracle services. They can receive rewards for their activities and help ensure the security of the network. The users can stake their tokens with the validators they trust to receive rewards from securing the network as well..

This system is based on the concept of Delegated Proof-of-Stake. The validators should work correctly, because of the aligned incentives. 

Building the Data Layer for Web3

Band is one of the pieces of infrastructure that facilitates blockchain application connectivity with the physical world. Band facilitates connectivity between APIs and data feeds, helping in making smart contracts more practical.

Band does this by ensuring security on the network and aligning incentives for the different parties involved; validators, delegators, developers, and users.

With cryptocurrencies becoming increasingly multichain, the importance of having a secure data infrastructure becomes ever greater. The role played by Band is therefore to ensure that external data is available and verifiable.

A drop in price to below the level of $60,000 is hardly ever due to one reason alone. Rather, it usually indicates a combination of negative forces, including reduced spot buying, ETF selling, economic uncertainty, taking profits, leverage unwind, and risk-off sentiment on a broader front.

Psychology is the most important aspect here. [Bitcoin](https://exolix.com/currencies/btc){:target="_blank" rel="dofollow"} was already an asset under close inspection by institutions, and so the level of $60K was no ordinary figure. It was significant territory that denoted strength, accumulation, and confidence after the ETFs. For Bitcoin to break through it means that doubts are being cast about the main trend itself.

### Weak Demand After a Strong Market Cycle

One of the main reasons behind the falling trend is the lack of aggressive buying pressure. The rallies of Bitcoin usually depend on the creation of fresh liquidity for the market. If there are fewer incoming transactions, then even small selling actions would bring down the price.

Such a situation might happen after a strong price move once the earlier buyers have gained from their trade, short-term players decrease their positions, or the institutions stop their purchasing activities.

### Why Sentiment Turns So Fast

The sentiment towards crypto is highly reactive. While Bitcoin is trading on top of important levels, there is always a discussion on how Bitcoin is at an all-time high and how the cryptocurrency is scarce. However, when the price of Bitcoin drops, the sentiment can change within a few hours. 

There are searches on why Bitcoin prices are falling, why is the crypto market crashing, and why Bitcoin prices are dropping today. The traders want to know if the move is only a temporary correction or something more serious.

### Bitcoin Leads the Wider Crypto Market

Bitcoin remains the main source of liquidity within the cryptocurrency space. Once Bitcoin breaks down below a certain point, the altcoins also tend to show more substantial losses. 

This happens since the trader often tends to decrease the risk position within the cryptocurrency space rather than simply in Bitcoin. Therefore, once Bitcoin enters the correction stage, it might result in a general correction in the entire cryptocurrency space. 

Ethereum tokens, Layer 2 tokens, meme tokens, AI tokens, as well as other altcoins, might lose their value as the trader either moves to stablecoins or simply cuts the leverage position. If enough of these redemptions take place, it might negatively affect the price of BTC.

For this reason, ETF flows have become a highly watched indicator whenever Bitcoin experiences major drawdowns. If Bitcoin and ETF outflows happen simultaneously, it may be seen as a more significant event.

### Profit-Taking After Strong Gains

The presence of institutional pressure does not automatically mean there is panic selling. In some instances, it is just a simple case of taking profits. After making huge gains, the funds may be rebalancing the portfolios, harvesting gains, or decreasing positions before key economic events.

For Bitcoin, however, it may prove to have significant impact on the market even so. BTC markets are always open but institutional money moves based on more conventional financial cycles. They include rebalancing, risk, fund flow, and macro-positioning on a monthly basis.

This means that when ETF outflows are followed by lower retail buying, combined with liquidations, the fall might quicken. Therefore, the matter of why the price of Bitcoin is falling today may involve a combination of several factors. The ETF outflow is just one factor among others.

Nevertheless, this does not mean that Bitcoin behaves similarly to technology stocks on the daily basis. But, if macroeconomic conditions worsen, correlations become stronger. Traders see Bitcoin as a part of risk assets, instead of considering it as a separate class of asset.

### The Role of the U.S. Dollar

Another element that may negatively impact Bitcoin and crypto crash is an appreciation of the dollar in the U.S. As BTC trades globally in terms of dollars, a strengthening of the dollar can create unfavorable conditions for foreign investors.

Commodities, investments from emerging markets, and cryptocurrencies can feel the burden of an appreciation of the dollar. For Bitcoin, this factor raises the question about what is causing the fall in the price of BTC despite on-chain fundamentals being intact.

### Risk-Off Sentiment Spreads Quickly

The cryptocurrency market is extremely vulnerable to changes in sentiment because of its round-the-clock nature and high level of leverage involved. In case of any headline emerging in the macroeconomic environment that makes the traders take a cautious approach, sell-offs can begin at weekends or Asian hours.

Strategy's Bitcoin Sale and Market Psychology

Another issue that can further weaken the position of Bitcoin is the decisions taken by large institutional investors. In cases when an influential corporate Bitcoin investor decreases their position in the asset, there is often a strong emotional reaction in the market before everything is clear.

It has traditionally been said that Strategy has been one of the biggest aggressors in the corporate sector that has bought Bitcoin. Thus, every single time some Bitcoin sale by the company was reported, it could affect market psychology. Even if such sales did not play a major role in terms of altering overall supply levels, they could still be seen as a signal.

### Why One Corporate Sale Can Matter

However, a particular sale cannot be viewed as an adequate explanation for the entire fall of Bitcoin and the whole crypto crash. The crypto trading market is large enough, and there are enough liquidity providers that a single headline would hardly explain the full drop. Market psychology still matters.

In case the crypto  market is already feeling under pressure, the sale of a large holder might reinforce many worries:

-   there might be a declining demand from companies;

-   similar actions of other large holders may follow;

-   stories of accumulation may become less convincing;

-   more traders may decide to close long positions;

-   breakdowns at particular support levels can occur faster due to poor sentiment.

Such an issue will be especially important when approaching significant price points. If Bitcoin has already started testing support around $60,000, then negative headlines can make traders sell Bitcoin quickly. They might close their positions, exit leverage, and market makers might provide less liquidity after the move.

### Narrative Shift From Accumulation to Caution

In times when things are bullish, institutional investment in Bitcoin is often taken as validation that there is more acceptance of the asset. The corporate treasuries, ETFs, and the hodlers are considered sources of demand for the asset.

But in times of bearishness, the story can quickly change. Instead of asking about who bought, the market starts asking about who will sell next. Such a transition can make the market appear much weaker than it really is based on the numbers.

As a result, news surrounding big buyers can become a part of the story around Bitcoin's decline. While not being the only factor, they definitely contribute to the fear in the market.

Why Is Crypto Crashing Alongside Bitcoin?

Should the price of Bitcoin break below a particular level, the overall crypto market would follow suit. The reason behind this occurrence is that Bitcoin remains the primary source of liquidity within the crypto space. Even if there is an altcoin narrative, BTC will set the tone of the market sentiment.

Should Bitcoin weaken in value, the trader community usually tends to become conservative and take defensive actions such as liquidating altcoin positions, switching to stablecoins, cutting down on leverage, or just waiting for market structure to form again. Such behavior would create sell-off conditions for both BTC and altcoins.

### Why Altcoins Usually Fall Harder

Altcoins are even more volatile than Bitcoin. Altcoins often have less liquidity, shallower market depth, and are composed of more speculators. If Bitcoin undergoes a significant drop, altcoins may plunge faster as they have fewer buyers able to absorb such selling pressure.

All of this allows us to say that a Bitcoin correction is able to easily turn into a full-blown cryptocurrency market-wide correction even though the initial impetus might be solely Bitcoin-related.

Under normal circumstances, various segments of the crypto space can move independently from each other. AI coins can be rising while DeFi stays still. Ethereum might do better than Bitcoin. Meme coins can rise based on their own strength.

During stressful situations, correlations become higher. Investors no longer differentiate between the story behind each asset and simply view cryptocurrency as one type of risk asset class. It is in these moments when the question arises about why crypto is crashing rather than individual coins.

Liquidations, Leverage, and Technical Support Breaks
----------------------------------------------------

One such factor is that of leverage, which plays a key role in the swift escalation of Bitcoin sell-off waves. The crypto markets allow investors to make highly leveraged trades where one can buy a large amount of digital assets using borrowed money, especially through derivative exchanges. In cases where unfavorable price action occurs against these trades, exchanges liquidate their positions to prevent losses.

In case Bitcoin dips to an important support line, many long trades will likely get liquidated, thereby creating extra selling pressure, which might again lead to more liquidation of positions. Thus, a vicious cycle starts, resulting in a sharp drop in the market value of the digital asset.

In a normal corrective scenario, such events happen with heightened severity in the case where an excessively high number of traders are positioned on one side. In a market that is very much long, the fall in the price of Bitcoin leads to rapid liquidations.

In summary, the issue of why Bitcoin's prices have fallen today does not necessarily involve anything related to the news. There will be some occasions when a small fall in the price of Bitcoin will lead to exaggerated moves due to excessive trading positions above support.
